We’re searching for the ultimate donut.
Who doesn’t like donuts?
They are one of civilization’s more perfect inventions. First, they are round, reflecting and embracing the beauty of the circle. Second, they can be sweet, savory, or both. That flexibility is really uncommon (or shall we say, special) for most foods. And lastly, they are meant for the masses, literally. A “dozen donuts” is a routine order and is almost always shared.
Technically speaking, donuts are not a necessity. But they come close. After all, they are perfect for every occasion — whether you‘re sad or happy, before you start a diet and after you break it, and when you want to show your loved ones that you really really care.
So, why a tour?
Searching for the ultimate donut doesn’t mean we’re only looking for one donut. Ultimate means different things to different people at different times. Sometimes, we want the fancy $5 donut with insane flavors. Or a basic chocolate old-fashioned from a 24-hour truck stop. And other times, we just want something made by someone who doesn’t need to be called an artisan. It’s good to have options. And the only way to know your options is to actually go have a taste. That’s why we tour.
The Inaugural Tour
Launched in Summer of 2020, this tour (i.e., the Tufts Edition) was designed (geographically) around Tufts University. Other donut options in the greater Boston area (i.e., the Expansion Pack) were also provided. A “tour kit” was developed for this purpose. Check out the map and listing of “official venues”.
Anyone is welcome to participate in the tour by rating the places currently included on this website. If you’d like to contribute photos, please contact me directly.
This website will (hopefully) add more donuts shops over time and (hopefully again) develop more formalized tours. Suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Chairperson of Le Tour des Donuts
